Dev Deepawali Boat Booking Online 2026: How Many Nights to Stay and When to Book Before They're Gone

Kashi Tourism Admin 28 Oct 2026 9 min read

Dev Deepawali 2026 falls on Tuesday, 24 November. That is only a few weeks away, and we keep hearing the same two questions. How many days do we need? And is it too late for a boat?

It is not too late yet. But the easy choices are going fast. In this guide, we will show you how many nights to plan for boat booking for Dev Diwali in Varanasi, what order to book things in, and what the big night actually looks like. We run boat rides, cabs, and stays from Prahlad Ghat in Varanasi, so we have seen this night many times. The advice below comes from that.

Quick Answers

  • Date: Tuesday, 24 November 2026 (Kartik Purnima)
  • Best stay for most people: 2 nights, from 23 to 25 November
  • Boat ride length: About 3.5 hours, usually 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM
  • When to reach the ghat: By 4:00 PM
  • When to book: This week. Boat first, then hotel, then cab

What Is Dev Deepawali?

Dev Deepawali means "Diwali of the Gods." It marks Lord Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura. Locals believe the gods come down to bathe in the Ganga on this night, so the city lights lamps to welcome them.

After sunset, the ghat steps fill with lakhs of earthen lamps. The lamps run from Ravidas Ghat in the south to Raj Ghat in the north. Then comes the grand Ganga Aarti, fireworks, and a laser show.

Where you watch from matters. On the steps, you see the lamps in front of you. From a boat, you see the whole line of lit ghats at once. That is why most first-timers book a Dev Diwali boat ride in Varanasi before they book anything else.

Diwali and Dev Deepawali Are Different Nights

Many visitors mix these up, and it costs them. In 2026, Diwali is on Sunday, 8 November. Dev Deepawali comes 16 days later, on 24 November. Diwali in Varanasi is mostly a festival inside homes. The river show happens on Dev Deepawali.

One more date is worth knowing. Chhath Puja runs from 13 to 16 November on the same ghats. It is a separate festival with a different crowd. Some people join both into one long trip, but most do not need to.

So if you can visit only once and you want the lit ghats, pick 24 November.

How Many Nights Should You Stay?

This is where people guess wrong. They book one night, then lose half of it in traffic. Here are three real plans.

NightsBest forWhat you can cover
1 nightPeople from nearby citiesBoat ride and Aarti only
2 nightsMost families and couplesTemples, boat ride, Subah-e-Banaras
3 nightsSeniors and slow travellersAll of the above, plus Sarnath and the old city

One Night: Tight but Possible

Arrive on the morning of the 24th. Rest, eat, and head to the ghat by 4:00 PM. After the boat ride, sleep, and then leave the next day. This works if you live close by, say, Prayagraj or Lucknow. But if your train runs late, the whole plan slips. We do not suggest it for families with small kids.

Two Nights: The Plan We Suggest

  • 23 November: Arrive, check in, and eat early. Take a short walk. Save your energy.
  • 24 November: Visit temples in the morning. Rest after lunch. Leave for the ghat by 3:30 PM. Enjoy the boat ride in the evening.
  • 25 November: Wake early for Subah-e-Banaras at Assi Ghat. One local travel guide calls the morning after the calmest hour of the whole trip. The ghats are quiet, and lamps still sit on the steps. Then head home.

Picture a family of five flying in from Delhi. Two grandparents, two kids, and two parents. They land on the 23rd, rest, and do temples on the 24th morning. By 3:30 PM, they are walking to the boat, with snacks and shawls. Nobody is rushed. That is what two nights buys you.

Three Nights: A Slower, Deeper Trip

Add 26 November for Sarnath, the BHU temple and Ramnagar Fort. If you also want Ayodhya and Prayagraj, look at our Kashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya package. For a shorter city plan, try our 2-day Banaras tour package.

When to Book: A Simple Order

Boats are limited. Safety rules cap how many people can sit on each one. Hotels near the ghats go early. Move in this order:

  1. Boat first: Use our Dev Deepawali booking page or WhatsApp.
  2. Hotel second: Pick one close to the ghats if you can. A far hotel means more time in traffic.
  3. Cab third: Book your pickup and a car for the 24th. See our cab options.
  4. Darshan and tickets last: Check temple slots about a week before.

Want one number for all of it? Message us on WhatsApp at 9214191918.

Pick Your Boat

These are the four options on our booking page. Prices are per person and can change, so confirm on WhatsApp before you pay for the Dev Deepawali boat booking online.

  • Shared motor boat, β‚Ή2,999: The budget pick. Seats are limited to 60 percent of capacity. You get a life jacket, a guide, and water.
  • Premium shared light motorboat, β‚Ή3,999: A decorated boat with fewer people (45 percent of capacity) and light snacks and mineral water.
  • Double-decker Maharaja boat, β‚Ή4,999: Upper deck views, chair seating, light snacks and mineral water, only about 50 guests, and live music.
  • Premium luxury cruise, β‚Ή8,499: Air-conditioned lounge, limited VIP seats, welcome drink, live snacks counter, and washrooms on board.

All of them run for about 3.5 hours. You see the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh, the fireworks, and the laser show at Chet Singh Ghat.

Travelling with grandparents? Choose the Maharaja boat or the cruise, because chairs beat floor cushions for older knees. Couples and friends on a budget will be fine on the shared motor boat. You can see every option on our Dev Deepawali boat booking page.

The Evening, Hour by Hour

Timings change a little each year, so use this as a guide.

  • 4:00 PM: Reach the ghat or meeting point. Meet your coordinator.
  • 5:00 PM: The boat starts moving. Sunset in Varanasi comes a little after 5 PM at this time of year.
  • Around 6:30 PM: The Ganga Aarti begins at Dashashwamedh Ghat.
  • After the Aarti: Fireworks and the laser show. Last year, the laser show at Chet Singh Ghat began around 7:30 PM. Check this year's time with your boat team.
  • About 8:30 PM: The boat returns to the ghat.

The Last-Mile Problem

Here is what catches people off guard. Cabs cannot enter the old lanes on any day. On Dev Deepawali, they stop about a kilometre away from the river. Police put up barricades, and roads near Dashashwamedh are restricted. So you would be required to walk up to the destination. So reach early accordingly.

Some boats also run from different points, so ask where yours starts. A few easy steps help:

  • Ask exactly where your boat boards and where your cab can stop.
  • Leave earlier than you think. Add 60 extra minutes.
  • Wear slip-on shoes that are good for walking.
  • Share your live location with a family member and your coordinator.
  • Screenshot your booking message and save the coordinator's number.

Police have also limited outside boats before. In 2021, Hindustan Times reported that boats from outside Varanasi were not allowed on the river on Dev Deepawali. That is one more reason to book with a local operator who is known in the city.

Online or at the Ghat?

Boat prices in Varanasi are not fixed. Travel bloggers warn about this every year. On the night itself, rates can jump, and if something goes wrong, you have nobody to call. Boat booking for Dev Diwali in Varanasi online from a company with a real office gets you the details in writing. Before you pay anyone, ask these questions:

  • Is the price per person or per boat?
  • Is the boat shared or private, and how many people sit on it?
  • Where do we board, and at what time?
  • Are there life jackets for everyone?
  • What is the refund rule if our plans change?
  • Who do we call on the night?

If a seller cannot answer in plain words, walk away. Boat seats on this one night are not worth the risk. You can start with our Dev Deepawali boat booking page.

Sold Out? Here Is Plan B

It happens. You still have good options.

  • Try the 23rd or 25th: A normal evening Ganga Aarti boat ride has far fewer crowds. Our lighting decorated boat is built around the Aarti.
  • Watch from the ghat steps: Go early. You will be in a crowd, but you will be on firm ground. Assi Ghat usually feels calmer than the main ghat.
  • Come back the next morning: Walk the ghats on the 25th while the lamps are still on the steps.

What to Wear and Carry

Late November days are warm, but nights get cold on the water. Pack light.

  • A shawl or light jacket
  • Slip-on shoes
  • A small bag with a power bank, water, and some cash
  • A phone strap or pouch
  • Your booking screenshot and the coordinator's number

Safety on the Water

It is a beautiful night, but the river is crowded. Wear your life jacket the whole time. Stay seated, even when the boat rocks. Do not lean over the side for a photo. If you are travelling with small kids, sit them in the middle and keep them close. Tell your boat team about elders or kids when you book so they can help with boarding.
